We often get asked when the first visit to the Dentist should take place. According to the Canadian Dental Association, it is recommended that the first visit take place before the child’s first birthday.
There are multiple reasons to start off early. We usually want to introduce children to a dental home and familiar surrounding. In fact, we often recommend a first visit be exploratory allowing it to be a fun time (allowing the child to hear new sounds, get used to sitting in the dental chair, feeling the suction and gentle air/water spray etc)
At West Bowmanville Family Dental, we love kids and our reviews and patients are proud to say so ! We want your child’s first experience to happen before we have to do any emergency dental work. We usually will let the child have a ride in our rocket chair, allowing them to play with the air/water gun and encouragement at the end with a reward from our treasure box. We believe our gentle approach to dealing with children and seeing the same consistent Dentist and team members will allow us to establish a foundation for trust and comfort for many years to come.
At the end of the first visit, all recommendations will be presented along with any treatment required. We often recommend that kids return for routine hygiene checks at every 6 months. This allows us to catch any problems before they require invasive treatment often without the need for freezing or a local anaesthetic. We can also monitor the growth and eruption pattern of your child’s teeth to make sure there are no issues like crowding etc.
