Dental Implants: What Are They, Who Needs Them And How Do They Work

Dental Implants are used to replace weak or missing teeth.  We use dental implants to replace teeth allowing you to have a fresh start.

Dental Implants 101

For many people, visits to the dentist are difficult due to anxiety or past history of negative experiences. Gum disease also known as periodontal disease is an ongoing process that can leave teeth that once were considered saveable to a worse state. A dental examination of all your teeth and an honest discussion with your dentist can tell us whether you need one or many teeth replaced. We will discuss the dental implant options next and how it works.

How does a dental implant work?

If you already have a missing tooth then the space that was formerly occupied by the tooth is a candidate for dental implants in Bowmanville. If you have an existing tooth that is broken or cannot be fixed then often at the same time of tooth removal, a titanium or ceramic post is placed into the tooth space. Titanium and Zirconia(ceramic) have the interesting property of bonding or fusing to the jaw bone over a period of time. This bone or jaw fusion allows for a very strong and stable dental implant that can support a new crown or tooth on top.

Once the dental implant heals(typical 3-4 months of healing time), we take a digital impression using the iTero system to make a precise fitting tooth. If you are replacing several teeth or an anterior (front tooth), we will often give you a temporary appliance (denture or clear essix appliance pictured below).
