Sinus Lift Bone Grafting Explained

In certain areas of the jaw, often a procedure called a sinus lift bone graft is needed especially if a tooth has been missing for some time.  Often when a tooth is extracted in the upper jaw, the bone being quite soft, tends to shrink at a much faster rate than the lower jaw. When this is the case, we can use two procedures to regain the bone level back for dental implant procedures.

Sinuses are are empty spaces that are located above the roots of upper back teeth. Sometimes the roots of upper back teeth also extend into the maxillary sinuses which to have a tenting effect of holding the sinus floor.  As the roots are removed, the sinus tends to drop.  We compensate for the drop of the sinus by placing dental implants instead.  The sinus floor is raised and a bone graft substitute either from a donor or through bovine (cow) or synthetic sources. Often if the level of bone has not shrunk significantly, we can place the dental implant at the same time of procedure.  The bone that is placed gets changed to the patient’s own bone over the next few months.

This is a different approach to increase the bone in the sinus area and the dental implant is placed at the same time.  For an example of this case please see here
