How long does it take for dental implants?

We often get patients asking about dental implant treatment in Bowmanville and how long the procedure takes. Dental Implants are placed in a number of steps in order to provide the best results.

The Dental Implant Procedure

To determine if you are a good candidate for a dental implant procedure we recommend a proper evaluation with a dentist with dental implant training. Dentists in Canada require a minimum amount of hours in this field in order to be qualified for this kind of procedure.

In some cases where teeth have been missing for a long time, bone grafting may be necessary which can extend the length of the procedure until the appropriate healing occurs. Early treatment is recommended so that we do not delay the procedure and associated bone loss that occurs.

The Dental Implant First Stage

The dental implant replaces the root portion of the tooth and is inserted into the jawbone. Over the next few months, new bone grows against the implant surface making it solid enough to retain a new tooth over top.

The healing period can take anywhere from three to six months. Most dental implant procedures are completed within an hour or two and can be longer for more extensive procedures involving many teeth being replaced.

The Dental Implant Second Stage

The second stage of the dental implant procedure involves attaching the abutment which is the connecting piece between the implant and your new replacement tooth. The abutment is custom made for your mouth by taking a digital scan of your mouth using the iTero 3D system.  It takes about two weeks for your new tooth and custom abutment to return from the lab.

The Dental Implant Third Stage

This is the last stage of the procedure, where the new tooth and abutment are placed in the mouth. The dentist checks the fit of your new crown and bite. We recommend during the first year especially to get dental cleanings every four months to make sure your gums stay healthy around your new tooth.
