Dental implants or a denture?

Often we get asked by patients how to choose replacement options for their missing teeth and cost becomes one of the main concerns.  A partial denture is a denture that clasps or hooks on to the remaining teeth to provide support for the missing spaces.  This is not a permanent alternative to lost teeth as these hooks often become unstable and loose.  The denture is often made of plastic with metal hooks.  They are visible in the mouth when most patients smile and often are a common place for food to get stuck under the denture.

In the upper jaw, the roof of the mouth must be covered with plastic or metal to provide support for the denture.  The lower jaw has the tongue behind the front teeth and those teeth need to be covered to provide a firm base for the denture.  Most often we view partial dentures as transitional dentures and most patients end up in full upper and lower dentures with time.

A complete or full denture is placed over top of the gum to cover lost teeth.  This is an alternative that is low in cost but often comes at big disadvantages.  Often the denture can only be used to chew in an up-down motion.  Food is limited in hardness and some patients are prone to gagging or developing sore gums over time from denture use.  A full upper denture placed in the top jaw also blocks the taste sensation of food as it covers the palate.  Most often a full lower denture becomes very difficult to use as there is no suction like in the upper jaw.
