Dental Implants or a Denture? How to Choose?

Implant retained dentures, sometimes called implant overdentures, are an excellent solution where due to unforseen circumstances, we no longer have the option of using existing teeth to clasp a partial denture to.  Often in such cases, especially in the lower jaw we are left with a denture that is unstable.  Many factors can be attributed to this, such as muscles attached to the underside of the jaw that when are activated by the tongue moving, cause a lifting effect of the denture.  Unlike the upper jaw, where we can have the luxury of a ‘suction cup ‘ effect with a complete upper denture that covers the palate   (roof of the mouth), this is simply not an option with the lower.

Small attachments are placed on top of each implant that act as clips for the retention of the denture.  The denture is inserted and removed no differently as before.  The dental implants also act to stop further bone loss in the area.  A denture on its own simply does not cause enough pressure on the bone to keep it from shrinking.  I would like to use the analogy of a muscle in use, the bone is no different.  With a dental implant in place attached to the denture and jaw bone, the act of chewing transfers enough pressure to the bone to keep it active or trained.  This prevents shrinkage which then also helps to retain the denture for years to come.
