Dental Implant OverDenture How it works

Often dentures become loose over a period of years, this is especially common in the lower jaw.  Dental Implants especially in the lower jaw can support a denture and allow it to be secure without the need for paste, glue and adhesives.

There are several options for retaining a denture, a denture can be connected to a bar which is attached to a number of implants. The denture snaps on/off the bar and is removed after meals for cleaning and at night time.

A fixed or non removable bridge is another option, if finances permit it.  Often if someone has an existing comfortable denture, we can convert it to allow for the attachments on the dental implants.

People often ask how the number of implants are chosen. It depends on the area of the jaw we wish to have the procedure done on.  Often the upper jaw bone density is much softer, so we need to compensate for this by having 4-6 implants.  In the lower jaw anywhere from 2-4 implants can be sufficient to secure a denture.

Below are two examples of implant overdentures , the first is an upper denture that is converted with 5 implants, we can now remove the covering on the roof of the mouth and the patient can now taste their food again.  The second case is a lower jaw case using 4 implants to retain the denture.
